Their flow is slow, but over 1000s of years glaciers transformed the surface of Wisconsin’s landscape (or not—lookup the Driftless!). Base figure from esteemed WI geologist L. Clayton used to compare glacial phases to surface terrain.
The Driftless is well known in these parts as an area that didn’t see glacial deposits (drift), and as a result the area’s steep hills were never effectively smoothed over by glacial movement.
Visual adapted from figures in: Clayton, Lee et al. “Glaciation of Wisconsin.” 2006.
