While many have been lost over the destructive course of colonial settlement, Dane County was originally home to thousands of earthen burial mounds. This map depicts some of the remaining effigy mounds constructed by the Ho-Chunk Nation around Teejop (the “Four Lakes” area now known as Madison), which often took the form of spiritually significant animals.
